Since I'm new to woodcarving, I have to admit that I had some reservations about this company. I was advised to get Mora and Pfeil in everything I read and watched. I purchased Pfeil gouges and Mora knives, but I chose to gamble on this hook knife. I'm not sure why, but in comparison to the others, this brand seemed a little sketchy.I'm pleased I bought this, though. The knife arrived surgically sharp and ready to use, and it performs just as well as my Moras. The knife was surgically keen when it was delivered, and it has maintained its edge for several projects with only the odd stropping—which was probably not necessary.The knife is well-made, and the oak handle fits the hand quite well. The flats on the side of the handle provide superb tactile input and facilitate simple knife control. The copper ferrule is attractive, too. Overall, for such a low cost, this knife is quite well constructed. I believe I would have just purchased BeaverCraft knives if I could go back in time.I do wish a case or sheath had been supplied with this knife. I can't really complain, though, considering the price. When I get time, I'll create something for it.

I'm not aware of any means to obtain the books.A 2 was replaced by a 5 in my rating. The eBooks reportedly arrive by mail a week after purchase; mine did yesterday. The knives themselves appear ideal for our requirements. They had a razor edge right out of the box and just needed a few strokes on a strop block to get it. These knives are inexpensive and will be great beginner knives to see how serious the guys will be about their wood carving aspirations. There are other more expensive knives available that may be of interest later. After that, we can consider various knife categories and designs.

Outstanding knife set! I adore these knives since they operate so well and have ergonomic handles. When I go camping, I like to relax by carving spoons; this set is small and convenient to bring. Since the knives are simple to sharpen and maintain their edge nicely, the steel appears to be quite good. I purchased a set for my close buddy who loves to use my knives and is just starting to carve since I loved this set so much!Update: After extensively utilizing my knife set, I purchased two gouges, a draw knife, and another full set from the seller in addition to another set for my brother. This knife works well for carving wood. I don't see how you could get anything better for the money. I recently finished carving a project for several hours, and it worked flawlessly. There was never a need to strop because the edge remained extremely sharp.Although there was a slight wire edge in certain spots on the cutting edge when the blade arrived, I didn't mind it for a $20 knife. The knife was stropped to restore it to its razor-like condition. The blade's grind is ideal for woodworking because it only has the primary grind and no relief edge. Due to this, cuts may be made very precisely with little accidental drift. This knife's extremely fine tip is ideal for work in the details.The handle's fully symmetrical tapered oval cylinder design is the only drawback I can think of for this knife. Although ergonomically sound, there is no indication on the handle which direction you should hold the knife so that the cutting edge faces outward. The blade being nearly mirror-polished may seem obvious, but while working on a project for a while, your eye does not always give you the right information. I picked up the knife a few times and was about to make a cut with the cutting edge up against my thumb. Fortunately, I caught my error before I hurt myself. This problem will be resolved if I cut the handle and add some finger grooves.Expect nothing more than a cheap plastic sleeve that the knife sort of fits into; the belt carry tab is also essentially useless. I took it out. Again, I'm not really upset about the pricing. The sheath merely serves the purpose of guarding the edge.

I erroneously believed them to be true as a result, and boy was I wrong. After taking off the safety cap, I was able to cut my index finger. It includes a hook knife, a sloyd knife, a detail knife, and a sharpening stone (not a huge one, but better than nothing if you don't really want to spend extra money). The hook knife is used to make the scoop portion of the spoons or bowls.I started utilizing these items immediately away, and after bandaging my wound, I was prepared to leave with more caution this time. I can see how folks in those videos make it seem so simple since they cut extremely nicely and smoothly. I am ecstatic with these tiny carving tools. Despite having several larger palm-style chisels, I wanted something for finishing and detail work that was lighter. They appeared far better than a prior set I had purchased at first glance. The handles' non-round shape and flat sides are features I enjoy. The others had a tendency to fall off the table. The stain looks fine, and the edges are well-groomed, even, and sufficiently sharp to begin with.Here are the actual details. Tools are meant to be used; their aesthetic appeal is largely irrelevant. Any new cutting tool I use gets sharpened before use. With these, that task went quite quickly. Me and a strop were the only ones cleaning the edge for the most part. In a matter of minutes, they moved from being razor sharp to being quite sharp. I've used them on hickory, pine, and bass and was a little taken aback by how quickly and easily they cut. I believe that the relatively thin blade material, when compared to the palm chisels, is a contributing factor. Since the edge's angle is much narrower, it glides into the wood more easily. Those palm chisels will definitely be reground!I don't know for sure how long they will survive because I haven't had them that long, but I take good care of my carving tools. I work alongside a steel, 10,000 grit stone, and strop to maintain an even, smooth edge that reduces the need for frequent metal removal for sharpening. The metal has a pleasant texture. For woodworking, carbon steel is just superior to any stainless steel I have yet to find. If you don't take care of them, it will rust. Nearly a century old carbon steel knives that I own are still in good condition. the prolonged yet worthwhile work required to maintain carbon steel. Since stainless steel is completely dull if it becomes dull, you must constantly work to keep it sharp. Stainless is more brittle on the edge than carbon steel, which will bend. When used on carbon steel, a sharpening steel simply bends the edge back up; but, when used on stainless steel, it can break the edge off, rendering the knife completely dull and requiring a significant amount of time spent grinding on coarser stones in order to regain the edge.In the end, I like how they appear and the design of the handles. The blades are finely formed, straight, and smooth, and carbon steel is a major bonus in my book. Even the plastic bag they came in is appealing to me. Normally, I discard things and create a tool roll out of leather or canvas. As long as you use them as they were designed, perform light detail and finishing work, and maintain the blades with a little oil, I haven't been able to find any drawbacks to these.

Good tiny carving set, although it would be wonderful to have an additional v and u notch. I bought these for a project I'm working on that involves creating imitation solid wood beams that I need to distress; these tools help me get that look. To get the aesthetic I want, these combined with an angle grinder work great. Each year, I also carve pumpkins as shown in the picture. The tools are short, which I like, light, and presumably made of pine, though a hardwood handle would have been preferable for the price. This set with an exacto knife is all I really need. best suited for soft woods like pine, clay, and pumpkins.

more than 45 years have passed since I was a Boy Scout. Buy the three cherry German tools if perfection is what you seek. But these are fantastic because I'm getting my son into wood carving for scouting. Better than the pin knife my father gave me when I was his age. They have a strong, crisp edge that holds up well against stone. They are comfortable in the hand and maintain a great cutting edge throughout a job of ordinary size. I am impressed with coming off shore and using eastern steel for the pricing. A second pair that I purchased had more gouges and had terrible edges that wouldn't accept an edge. Keep in mind that there are apprentices and masters in every factory. If an apprentice polished yours, make an effort to fine the edges and test their durability. I'm going to take them to the grinder and try to fine-tune them so they will function with a hand stone. Make the effort to sharpen the edge of every knife you use, then take breaks from your work as needed to maintain the edge before it wears out and you have to start over. nice, affordable starter set When using any knife, especially one with a duller edge, wear gloves or finger and thumb protection.
