I just use this to drain my cast iron. gives my cast iron an almost glass-like gloss. I combine it with grapeseed oil to make a seasoning that is much better. I can't recall where I received the information below, but I took it to heart and it has significantly improved the quality of my cast iron items. When heated and dried, flax seed oil hardens more effectively than other oils and, most importantly, is safe for use in food. Together, these three qualities make it the ideal oil for seasoning. It must be safe for consumption, and that, together with the fact that it hardens superior than other food-approved oils, gives it an excellent seasoning layer for cast-iron pans. My cast irons are incredibly smooth and keep their layers extremely well, so I could tell the difference when I used them. I also use coconut oil because of its high smoke point when I only need to give the pans a light oiling after cooking because this oil is so pricey. However, if I suspect that the non-stick surface is fading a little, I use this liquid (my magic fairy dust) to ensure that the layer doesn't go and that the surface stays smooth and slippery while cooking.

Use it to season my cast iron cookware, of which I have a lot. First, use steel wool to scrub away any rust, dirt, etc. Then use 40 grit to sand down to the bare metal. Then gradually increase the grit of your sandpaper until you get the required smoothness. I use grit all the way up to 1000. The final finish after seasoning will be smoother and your cookware's non-stick qualities will be better the smoother your pan is. After giving your bakeware a good cleaning, put it in a warm oven to let all the moisture burn off. Remove cookware and use a microfiber cloth to apply a very thin layer of flax oil (you don't want any fibers in your seasoned cookware). After that, heat your greased cookware for an hour in a 500°F oven. Allow it cool for an hour in the oven. After that, bake while adding another layer of flax oil. Repeat. I enjoy repeating five or six times. You'll end up with a long-lasting non-stick surface. To keep your smooth non-stick surface intact, avoid using sharp anything that could harm the seasoning. Depending on how frequently and carelessly you use your cast iron cookware, you may eventually need to go through the same process again.

I invested in a carbon steel skillet and started experimenting with flax seed oil's ability to prevent sticking. I learned the technique from the internet, which calls for coating the pan with flax seed oil several times while using high heat. The method described called for five sessions, lasting roughly two hours each. I applied the same nonstick coating to the carbon steel skillet in half the time using my gas grill set to high. Using a paper towel and heating oil, coat the skillet very thinly. Grill should be set to high. Place skillet on grill and cook for 45 minutes. After cooling to 200°F, apply oil five more times. As long as you avoid using acidic juices like lemon or washing with soap, the carbon comes out light colored and nonstick. In addition, I add a few drops of oil to the skillet after use and clean it with hot water and a paper towel. In comparison to previous nonstick techniques, this was far better. I always assumed olive oil would be fine to use, and I believed I was right, but man, was I mistaken. I finally got off my bum and ordered this, and after just a few coats, I now understand what a quality cast iron pan ought to be like. In fact, it makes the surface slick and nearly has a teflon-like sensation. Once more, this is only two or three coats in. eager to put on a few more.
